Wheezing Cough Treatment

wheezing cough treatmentWhen considering various wheezing cough treatments, it is important to first identify its cause. Wheezing cough can be caused by a variety of things such as allergies, cold weather, illness, asthma, bronchitis, or pneumonia. Fortunately, there are many home remedies that can help to bring relief from wheezing cough.

It is quite common for a wheezing cough to be brought on by an allergic reaction to mold, dust, or animal dander so it is a good idea to vacuum often and keep the surfaces in your home dusted. Keeping your air conditioning filters changed regularly will help to keep your home dust free and will filter out allergens that may be making you sick. Additionally, avoid strong smells like perfumes, chemicals, and smoke if you are sensitive or allergic to them. Dairy products, bananas, and red meat are a few foods that increase mucus production in the body and can make a wheezing cough worse, so avoid them. Also be sure to cover your neck and mouth if you must go out in cold weather. If the wheezing cough is due to an excessive amount of mucus in the lungs, try sleeping with your head propped up by pillows. Additionally, try to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day. This will help to keep the mucus lose that may be causing the wheezing.

To relax sore back and chest muscles, try taking a warm bath or wrapping a hot towel around your shoulders, chest, or back. A more immediate wheezing cough treatment that also soothes the throat is hot tea with ginger, cloves, cinnamon, or camomile. Hot water with honey and lemon will also help to quiet a cough and soothe your throat. In the case of a bronchial infection, the wheezing can be caused by spasms in the bronchial tube. In this case, steam inhalation can be used as a wheezing cough treatment. This can be done in the shower, over a sink, or by using a humidifier. Different oils like peppermint, eucalyptus, and lavender may also be rubbed directly on the chest to relieve coughing. Rubs containing menthol will also provide the same effect.

For wheezing cough due to asthma, sucking on a garlic clove or a piece of ginger may help. Although this method may not be the most appetizing method for relief, it does work. If this method seems too extreme for you, try chopping or blending the garlic or ginger very finely and adding it to vegetable juice.

If you have tried relieving your wheezing cough at home to no avail and you are still in need of a wheezing cough treatment, your local drug store may provide some help. Many over-the-counter medications exist for persistent wheezing cough. Of course, if you have tried all of these methods and the cough remains, it is always best to see a physician. In rare cases, a wheezing cough can be an indicator of something more serious so your physician would need to explore more options for your wheezing cough treatment.
